Operations Update: Sherwood Opens Tomorrow

Features in Belmont Park at Palisades.

Sherwood will open tomorrow and it will operate daily, weather and conditions permitting. Snow conditions are extremely thin in this area, but in an effort to expand our available skiable terrain, we have decided to move forward with getting this area open. Sherwood will have no grooming except for the maze area. This means that if you are going to ski or snowboard in this area, you need to be aware of your surroundings. No beginners should attempt this terrain in these “low-tide” conditions.

Ski Safety Month: Being Safe in Variable Conditions

It happens to the best of us: You’re out skiing or snowboarding when you suddenly catch an edge, and it wipes you out. You immediately think: I’m so glad I’m wearing my helmet! We’re glad when you wear your helmet, too. It is important to practice good safety measures on our mountains, so to celebrate NSAA’s Ski Safety Month, we’re sharing a few safety tips for having a fun, seamless time enjoying Palisades Tahoe. Plus: We have safety-related events going on such patrol dog demonstrations and beacon practice with Alpenglow Expeditions!

Operations Update: Funitel Maintenance; Snowfall Today

A PistenBully machine in the snow on the upper mountain.

We got some snowfall on the upper mountain last night, but it has been rainy in the base areas. As of 5am, the Alpine base area got about 2 inches of snow and the upper mountains had around 4 inches. It kept snowing after that point, but the best conditions were found higher up on the hill today. Our storm total is now up to 14 inches, and we will see more scattered precipitation throughout the day and evening.

Operations Update: Storm Cycles to Impact Weekend Operations

Rime Ice built up on a grip.

We’re excited about the snow totals in the forecast. From Friday to Tuesday, we’re looking at more than 20 inches on the upper mountains. We need this snow as we currently are just above 50% of our average snowpack for this time of year, and any moisture is good moisture for the Tahoe region. We do expect to see some wind impacts on Saturday, and because these storms will move in wet, icing could lead to delayed openings throughout the weekend.

Operations Update: Saturday Storm & Sunday Expectations

Belmont Terrain Park earlier this week.

Another storm moves into the Lake Tahoe region tonight, with possible new snow totals of up to 20 inches at our highest elevations. This snowfall will have impacts on our operations, especially on Sunday morning when the weather clears. On both Saturday and Sunday, we will be digging out, performing snow safety, de-icing chairlifts, and preparing for this holiday weekend. Here is what we are expecting over the next few days:

Operations Update: Delayed Openings, No KT-22

Olympic Valley at Palisades.

Following yesterday’s incident, we have lost the access road to KT-22 due to avalanche debris. Access roads are required to get snowcats and snowmobiles up the mountain to spin the lift, and it is very time-consuming to put these roads in. With the heavy snowfall we saw overnight, we were not able to reestablish the road.

Operations Update: Planning To Open Scott & KT-22 on Wednesday

The top of KT-22 earlier this week.

We plan to add Scott at Alpine and KT-22 at Palisades to the schedule on Wednesday. A lot of work goes into prepping these two lifts, even with the help of recent snowfall. Patrol, Lift Operations, and Lift Maintenance teams will be working throughout the day tomorrow to set ropes, finish ramps, and work out any last-minute kinks in the chairlift. So while you may see these chairs spinning tomorrow, our opening goal is Wednesday. Please be aware that this could change if we find any issues with either chair tomorrow, or if the Wednesday storm brings weather impacts.
