Our biggest weekend of the season has come to a close: The 2024 Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup is in the books. It was another weekend to remember: emotional, exciting, and exhausting for those of us who worked long hours to make it happen. Unlike the 2023 Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup, when we received 146 inches of snow in one week and it took true miracle work to pull it off, this year we had sunny, beautiful skies and decently warm temperatures for February.
Palisades Tahoe, nestled in the breathtaking Sierra Nevada, is the premier training ground for top-tier athletes destined for the highest levels of international competition. This is where champions are forged, legacies are born, and history is made. Rooted in the historic 1960 Winter Olympics, our mountain continues to shape the future of ski racing, setting the stage for the upcoming 2024 Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup. This is where ski racers will become champions, where legends will become legendary.
The Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup, a stop on the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Tour, will be at Palisades Tahoe from February 24th to February 26th. This is also Presidents Weekend and the tail end of local Ski Skate Week, so expect this to be a busy but exciting time. To help you prepare for a weekend like this and have a seamless visit, we’ve compiled this guide for how to visit Palisades Tahoe on the Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup weekend. By following the tips in this blog, you’ll have an easier time, and you’ll also make it easier on others who want to watch the Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup and go skiing, too.
In the final days of February 2023, 146 inches of snow fell on the slopes of Palisades Tahoe. It was our biggest storm of the season to date. It was also timed exactly with our biggest event of the season, the Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup, a stop on the 2023 Audi FIS Ski World Cup tour. The Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup was set to be back on the legendary Red Dog racecourse at Palisades after a 6-year hiatus. As our teams watched the weather forecast, we had no way to guarantee that we’d be able to pull off hosting the international race. You see, while we were excited for the epic powder days to come following the storm, ski racing requires a very specific, firm surface — a surface that is in stark contrast to fresh powder.
That’s a wrap on the incredible 2022/23 winter season. After an unbelievable 723 inches of snowfall and skiing that lasted into the month of July, it feels surreal to finally be saying goodbye to one of the most historic and memorable seasons we’ve ever had. The huge amount of snowfall (our season average is only 400 inches!) made for some extreme working conditions, but our teams persevered through every obstacle: digging out their own homes, driving in treacherous conditions, and working throughout every blizzard to keep these mountains open. We are ALL excited to have a few months of sun, and a break from digging out.
Last weekend, against all odds, the Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup (a stop on the Audi FIS Ski World Cup tour) took place in Olympic Valley. It was a nail-biter as record-breaking snow pummeled the region. Like magic, there was a 36-hour break in extreme winter weather in which the race was able to occur. The break in the weather wasn’t the only thing that made this event possible, though. The real story here is the incredible work of our operations teams, who were on the hill around-the-clock slipping and clearing the racecourse until the final moments before the Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup kicked off. Let’s look back at their heroic work, as well as the weekend’s events.
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) gave the go-ahead for The Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup to host the Giant Slalom and Slalom scheduled for February 24th-26th. As with every stop on the Audi FIS Ski World Cup, each mountain must pass “snow control” ahead of the races to ensure course quality for the racers. Palisades Tahoe has received 395 inches of snowfall this season and groomers and racecourse planners have been working on the closed course since February 10th.
