Operations Update: February 5

  • Feb 4, 2017
  • 3:29 pm
Today’s Overview: February 4, 2017

Today was extremely windy at both mountains. Wind gusts have been over 100mph since 10am on the ridgeline at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, which greatly impacted our operations. The top terminal annomonenter at Roundhouse was recording 60-75 mph winds.

Windy & Stormy WEATHER CONTINUES

Update from National Weather Service @ 3:07pm

“A series of storms will impact the region this coming week with a mix of wind, snow, and heavy rainfall. The first storm Sunday night into Monday will bring strong winds areawide along with mountain snows. A second storm Tuesday into Wednesday is likely to bring heavy mountain rainfall and a risk for flooding of streams and poor drainage areas. A third storm Friday doesn`t appear as strong but could bring more rain and snow to the region.”

Tomorrow’s Operations Outlook, February 5, 2017

We expect more of the same tomorrow. In fact, the National Weather Service forecast is calling for stronger winds than what we saw today. Gusts at 7,667′ will be over 70mph. Gusts on ridges will be over 100mph. While we are expecting these conditions, we are bringing a full team to open as much as possible if weather and conditions allow, but high winds WILL be a challenge.

* Projected Scheduled Lifts

Every evening at 4pm, our Dispatch Teams publish their “schedule” for the following days operations on our website and app. This is our operations team best guess of what we will be able to operate based on weather forecasts, avalanche forecasts, terrain accessibility and so much more. We encourage you to review this projection and keep in mind on dynamic storm days, these projections from the night before, could change in the morning and throughout the day based on terrain and lift assessments from patrollers, groomers and lift mechanics out on the field. It is always best to check the app or website for real-time information as this is updated by our Dispatch Teams who are in direct communication with the operation folks on the mountain.

Operations Update: Warm Temps Return; Granite Chief Closed

After a small but exciting refresh of snow this week, we will be opening again on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for skiing and snowboarding. It will feel like spring out there, so get those boards and skis waxed, and come in costume: This weekend is Rodeo-themed. Our hours are still 9am-4pm, though that could change as soon as next week.
