Operations Update: April 11-12

  • Apr 11, 2017
  • 3:53 pm

Today’s Operations: April 11, 2017

Today we saw a mix of rain, snow, and high winds as the next storm begins to roll in. At Squaw Valley, wind gusts at the top remained high ranging from 60-80mph throughout the day. The Tram, Bailey’s Beach, Belmont, Mountain Meadow, Emigrant, Silverado, Granite Chief and Headwall did not open due to wind hold. The new 22 foot super pipe is cut and ready to ride, but was unable to open today due to low visibility. It is scheduled for tomorrow if conditions permit! At Alpine Meadows, all lifts ran except for Yellow and Alpine Bowl Chair.

Projected Operations for Wednesday, April 12

As the storm approaches, winds are forecasted to strengthen tomorrow. According to the National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory, “Sierra ridge gusts up to 120mph, with strongest winds likely Wendesday night.” We are geared up to run the scheduled lifts, but it is very likely that we will see wind hold or wind closures tomorrow as well. Today crews spent the day re-wiring and putting the final touches on the installation of the new communications line on Red Dog. As conditions permit, they will be out there again tomorrow finishing the testing process. It is possible the Red Dog could open to the public at some point tomorrow or Thursday.

Snow Moves in Wednesday Night

NOAA’s forecast is calling for 100% chance of precipitation Wednesday night. They are forecasting 6-10 inches Wednesday night and another 2-4 inches of new snow on Thursday. Then the skies clear for mostly sunny days on Friday and Saturday!

Operations Update: Wednesday Re-Opening Plans

Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 15th, we plan to reopen both Alpine and Palisades. We appreciate your patience with us being closed today: Our teams NEEDED this day to try to get ahead a bit, and snow conditions are not conducive to a good day of skiing -- It rained as far up as 9,000 feet at times. We spent the day continuing to dig out, performing snow safety, addressing flood zones, and preparing for the few days ahead that have a break in the weather. Tomorrow, we still expect that some of our lifts will be delayed. We will start with a lower mountain offering and expand throughout the day as we can.

Operations Update: The Never-Ending Storm Cycle + Sunday Expectations

Following a very wet 36 hours, we achieved the opening goals we set yesterday and got every lift that we expected today, thanks to the hard work of our ops teams. Seriously, it is hard work out there: So many people are out there digging chairlifts out by hand after spending the early morning hours digging their vehicles and homes out first. Our snowpack is very saturated with water and heavy, which can also make things difficult for our grooming machines. We truly have no clear days in the forecast to recover from this wet weather event, so we appreciate your patience.
