The 2017-18 Season Kicks Off Tomorrow!
It’s only been 4 months and 1 day since we closed on July 15, but winter can never come soon enough in Tahoe. It’s officially time to dust off your boots, wax your boards, and hit up your ski buddies because the 2017-18 Winter season kicks off tomorrow at Squaw Valley.
Here’s what will be opening this weekend:
- Squaw Valley is scheduled to open Gold Coast (accessed by Funitel) on Friday, November 17 at 9am
- Alpine Meadows is scheduled to open Kangaroo Chair on Saturday, November 18 at 9am
- Once open, daily operations at both mountains are from 9am-4pm
- More terrain will open as weather and conditions permit!
Join us outside the Funitel at 8:45am Friday to kick off winter and toast to another season of skiing and riding our favorite terrain! Get there early for free giveaways.

“One Foot of the Best Base Quality Snow”
The first Atmospheric River of the season moved in yesterday bringing heavy precipitation, high winds, fluctuating snow levels and over a foot of snow at our higher elevations in time for Opening Day! The grooming team spent the day packing down the new snow and building lift ramps for Opening Day. The wet, dense snow we received is perfect for early season coverage on the slopes and is the “best base quality snow.”
It’s a good, sticky snowpack. It’s sticking to every rock, every stump and covering things uniformly. Once it cools down, this snow should last a long time.” — Kurt Wilhemy, Squaw Valley Grooming Manager
Ski patrol, lift operators, mechanics and snowmakers are also back in full force. They’ve been working together to spin the lifts, mark boundaries and make sure the snow surfaces are as safe and fun as possible for our first turns of the season!
Terrain Parks for Opening Day
The park crew is hard at work making use of the new snowpack to build features in time for Opening Day fun. Check out the Gold Coast park tomorrow with an assortment of jibs, a box and 3 rails!
SAF Scholarship Day
Opening Day is also a time to celebrate youth development in the community, as we donate a portion of every ticket sold to the Palisades Tahoe Foundation (SAF). There will be FREE cookies, coffee, tea and hot chocolate provided by SAF. Ski team kids will be selling raffle tickets from 8-11am with the raffle at 11:30am!
More Snow & More Terrain On the Way
According to NOAA, temperatures are forecasted to drop tonight with the potential for a few more inches of snow on the slopes! The low temps could also allow our snowmakers to fire the snow guns at both mountains. With snowmaking tonight and tomorrow at Alpine Meadows, Kangaroo should be ready to open on Saturday morning.
There are more potential storms in the forecast for Monday and Thursday, so stay tuned. We look forward to opening more terrain as soon as snow and weather allow!
