**Original Post**
After an extraordinary storm cycle that began earlier this week, we are approaching the first meaningful break in weather. In just four days, our mountains have received over 8 feet of new snow, reshaping the landscape and significantly impacting operations.
As we look ahead to Friday and the weekend, we want to set clear expectations for what guests may experience. Our teams remain in full re‑establish and recovery mode following the scale and intensity of this storm cycle. Terrain expansion will occur gradually, and only as conditions allow.
Operational Reality:
While snowfall intensity is decreasing, our work is far from complete. Much of the upper mountain remains difficult to access, with snow depth exceeding 8 feet in some areas. Over the past several days, access restrictions have constrained where patrol, grooming, lift operations, and mechanic teams have been able to travel. More teams were able to access upper-mountain terrain today, and additional work is expected to continue overnight; however, this progress does not mean all terrain or lifts will be ready to open.
As a result, terrain expansion will take time. Crews will continue avalanche mitigation work, access rebuilding, and route establishment as conditions allow. Open terrain and lift operations may change throughout the day, and delayed or phased openings should be expected.
Deep Snow Safety Reminders:
Extensive avalanche mitigation work is ongoing across both mountains. Refresh yourself on these quick points before heading to the mountain:
- Closed terrain is closed. Please respect all rope lines and closures.
- Ride with a partner and maintain visual contact.
- Avoid tree wells and the base of trees in deep snow.
- If you fall, attempt to fall feet first.
- Consider carrying appropriate rescue equipment and know how to use it.
The Plan for Tomorrow:
Friday is expected to bring a welcome break in the storm cycle, with clearing skies, lighter winds, and temperatures in the teens to the 20s.
While parking reservations are not required tomorrow, we expect our parking lots to fill. Please give yourself plenty of time to get to the mountains, consider carpooling with a friend, and ensure that your vehicle is well equipped for winter driving conditions.
Crews will be showing up before dawn for a full avalanche mitigation program before terrain and lifts are evaluated for opening. A slow, phased start should be expected at both mountains.
Palisades:
- The focus for tomorrow will be the same as the focus today with KT‑22, Red Dog, Resort Chair, Far East, Exhibition, Ahsoka, and Palisades Kids on the schedule, with expected delays.
- Additional access, avalanche mitigation, and evaluations are needed prior to opening the Funitel and all upper mountain lifts; they are not likely to open tomorrow.
Alpine:
- Roundhouse, Treeline Cirque, Meadow, Subway, Big Carpet, and Little Carpet are scheduled
- Summit Express, Scott, and Lakeview may open depending on access, avalanche mitigation, and evaluation.
- Crews are also hoping to establish access to Sherwood tomorrow; it is not likely to open tomorrow.
These projections are subject to change based on weather and conditions. Moving at the speed of safety remains the priority.
Looking Ahead to the Weekend:
Saturday is expected to bring a mix of sun and clouds with increasing winds and slightly warmer temperatures. Winds are forecast to build Saturday morning and strengthen through the day, with ridgeline gusts potentially reaching 50 mph, which could result in wind holds.
Following this extended storm cycle, we know many of you are excited to get out and enjoy the incredible stretch of fresh snow this weekend. With terrain access still evolving and wind potentially influencing operations, patience and flexibility will remain essential.
Parking reservations at Palisades Tahoe are sold out for the entire upcoming weekend, and parking capacity will be extremely limited. Road crews continue working to make travel corridors safe, open, and dug out, but this will take time. Guests should expect slower travel and congestion on major roadways, including I‑80, Highway 89, Olympic Valley Road, and Alpine Meadows Road.
If you are planning to visit this weekend, we strongly encourage using alternative transportation options where possible, including carpooling, rideshare, or regional transit. Plan ahead or adjust travel times around peak visitation periods for both recreation and daily commutes.

We appreciate the patience, understanding, and partnership of our guests as our teams continue working carefully and deliberately through this transition. Please continue to check the Mountain Report and Ikon Pass app for the most up-to-date operational information before heading to the mountain.
