At Palisades Tahoe, we believe that preserving the natural beauty of our mountain is just as important as enjoying it. This past year, our teams and community came together to make big strides toward a more sustainable future. From energy innovation and food waste reduction to transportation solutions and volunteer stewardship, here are some of the highlights of our environmental efforts from the 2024-25 season:
Transforming Transportation
This winter marked a major win for our sustainability goals: thanks to our parking reservation system, carpooling incentives, the Mountaineer shuttle, and Park & Ride services, we removed over 53,000 vehicles from local roads. That means 626 tons of CO2 stayed out of the atmosphere, and over 178,000 riders chose shared transit. It’s proof that when we all work together, the impact is huge.

Powered by the Sun
High on the slopes, the newly installed Red Dog Ski Patrol Shack now runs completely on solar power. This marks an important step in our ongoing mission to reduce our reliance on non-renewable energy sources and invest in sustainable infrastructure.

Tackling Food Waste Head-On
Thanks to a revamped waste management system across all nine of our restaurants, our Food & Beverage team diverted over 20,000 pounds of food waste from the landfill this year. On top of that, we recycled 5,000 gallons of cooking oil and implemented a new food waste minimization program that’s already making a difference. Another big win? The Mug Club initiative eliminated 7,291 single-use plastic cups, exceeding our goal of 6,000.

Ditching Single-Use: One Pouch at a Time
In an effort to reduce single-use plastics, we sold over 1,500 reusable water pouches this season. It’s a small shift with a big impact—and we’re thrilled to see so many of you carrying them around the resort. But this effort didn’t start recently. Back in 2016, we became one of the first ski resorts to eliminate single-use water bottle sales entirely. We launched the Drink Mountain Tap initiative, installing refillable water stations across the resort and introducing reusable water bottles. It’s a proud part of our sustainability legacy, and we’re continuing to build on that momentum every year.

Fueling Change with Renewable Diesel
We’ve been proud to run our grooming fleet on 100% renewable diesel, a cleaner-burning alternative that significantly reduces carbon emissions. We’re committed to exploring every avenue in choosing more sustainable fuel options.

Recycling Uniforms into Clean Energy
Sustainability is stitched into every corner of our operations—even our uniforms. This season, we began recycling 100% of our old uniforms through Ecycle Environmental, an innovative program that transforms materials into clean energy. It’s just one more way we’re closing the loop and reducing waste across the resort.

Sugar Pine Watering Days Return
Back by popular demand, our Sugar Pine Foundation Volunteer Days will return after the close of the winter season. This hands-on initiative helps restore critical native tree species, and we’re looking forward to getting back out there with our amazing community of volunteers.

Join us for Tahoe Truckee Earth Day: April 26, 2025
One of the largest Earth Day celebrations in the region, the free community event takes place at The Village at Palisades Tahoe from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and gives kids and adults the opportunity to learn about recycling, composting, alternative energy, and sustainability through hands-on activities the whole family can enjoy.
This event is a community tradition to learn about sustainable products and services offered by local organizations and businesses, meet with local area nonprofits that share Earth Day values, as well as showcasing local entertainment. Our goal is to connect the community with the people and resources found in our region who foster innovation, initiate change and ultimately implement an equitable partnership for a green planet.
