Syd Earley exemplifies the value of authenticity in every facet of her work. In one of the most emotionally demanding roles at the resort, she navigates the complex intersections of employee health, guest safety, and overall well-being with remarkable grace. Her approach is grounded in clarity and integrity—she never sugarcoats the truth, but delivers it with compassion and purpose. She has a unique ability to hold space for both the serious and the lighthearted, bringing warmth, humor, and humanity even to the toughest moments. Syd doesn’t hide behind policy; she leads with heart. Through her commitment to safety and her deep care for people, Syd has helped shape a culture of trust, resilience, and support at Palisades Tahoe. Her presence uplifts those around her, making our mountain stronger, kinder, and more connected.
Fun Facts:
What is the favorite part of your job? “I appreciate that my position allows me to collaborate closely with everyone at Palisades Tahoe across all departments. I enjoy daily problem-solving and being part of a solution to make this risky environment a bit safer for our team and guests. I am also grateful for the trust and relationships that my department, Health & Safety, has built over time through sharing and overcoming of some very challenging situations. Overcoming challenges together really strengthens a team.”
How do you feel you share the spirit of our legendary mountains? “That is a loaded question for anyone in ski resort risk management! We educate about the hazards of the sport, warn and inform about the beautiful, fun, and yet unpredictable environment that we work and recreate in.”
Of the four company values (Prioritizing Purpose, Honoring Authenticity, Cultivating Collaboration, Embracing Empowerment), which of these resonate most with you today? “Collaboration- Great people surround me, I work closely and rely heavily on my small team, Patty Tumenas and Erik Miller. A handful of patrollers are always available to me and very supportive during crises, and I have great trust and frequently lean into our mountain operation management team. I also have strong support from my boss Michael Gross. Michael not only has confidence in my work and is supportive but has given strong instructions and leads by example to always do the right thing.”
What was your favorite vacation, where did you go, what made it special? “My favorite vacation was speed-dating through Europe with my husband an two sons for a month! Nine countries, lots of hiking, biking, Aperol Spritz, great beer, food and amazing scenery. “
What’s the most interesting fun fact about yourself? “I paint.”
What’s your favorite animal and why? “Owl- They’ve got that whole ancient, all-knowing vibe going on. Big expressive eyes, rotating heads, and feathers that make them look like they are floating.”
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? “To breathe underwater for unlimited exploration, amazing peace and quiet!”
