Snowfall Report:
Ski Patrol reported 26 inches of new snow on the upper mountain Sunday morning May 5th!
That is a HUGE amount of snow in 24 hours in May. It’s a big storm even in the middle of January! What was even more unique was that it was cold with temperatures dropping into the teens on the peaks Saturday night bringing powdery to the upper mountain!
The biggest 24-hour snowfall of this season for Palisades was 31 inches on March 3rd. This storm was the 2nd largest 24-hour snowfall on May 5th! That’s pretty amazing in an above-average snowfall season. The storm brings Palisades to 423 inches for the season!
My final forecast Friday afternoon for the storm was for 15-21 inches, so we picked up 5 inches more than forecast. I don’t mind ending the forecasting season picking up more snow than forecast and with a 2+ foot powder day in May!
The Final Forecast:
High pressure will start to build in starting Sunday through the week of the 6th with temperatures warming a little bit each day. Mostly sunny skies are expected most days. Highs into the 40s Monday, 50s for Tuesday – Thursday, and 60s for the weekend of the 11th-12th. We may hit 70 degrees at the base on Sunday, one week from a 2-foot powder day!
I was going to finish forecasting for the season on April 29th but extended an extra week as I saw the potential for an epic storm on the models. I’m glad I stuck around to forecast through it! What a crazy season that started badly with little snow through the end of December, and ended up above average!
Thanks for another great season of tracking storms, see you next fall to start the 2024-25 season!
