We picked up less snow than expected overnight as the cold front moved through rather quickly, with little in the way of snow showers firing up behind the front through the early morning hours as the forecast models had shown. The mid-mountain snow sensor had a foot of new snow on it as of 3 AM which settled to 10″ by the time mountain ops reported at 5 AM.
We won’t be complaining about skiing 10″+ of new snow though on top of an already big base, with more snow falling Sunday!
Ridgetop winds from the west gusting up to 60-70+ mph early Sunday morning and then dropping through the day. That could delay some upper mountain lift openings Sunday morning but most should open through the day. Highs in the 20s.
Snow showers will fill back in again Sunday morning with snow showers expected through much of the day. Then winding down by Sunday evening. We are expecting an additional 5-10 inches of snow by Sunday evening.
Monday – Friday:
Monday through Friday high pressure builds in over CA. That will bring us a drier pattern with mostly sunny skies most days through the period. Still a bit chilly Monday with highs in the 30s and brisk northeast winds gusting up to 30-40+ mph up top. Then highs in the 30s on the upper mountain and 40s at the base starting Tuesday, along with lighter winds.
By next weekend a cut-off low could be spinning off of the CA coast. Some forecast models keep it off the coast with a dry weekend and other models are tracking the low closer to the coast with rain & snow reaching the northern Sierra. We’ll continue to watch the trends all week.
By the mid-month (2/14) through the 3rd week of February, we could see a trough dig in over the West and CA, and that pattern could last into the last week of February. That could start to open up the pattern to more storms moving into northern CA during the 3rd week of the month, and possibly continuing into the last week of February.
We’ll continue to watch the trends to see if we could see a more active storm track during the 2nd half of the month after a drier period during the 2nd week of February.
