Everybody thank a snowmaker or snowcat operator! Thanks to their hard work and some cold temperatures this week, we will be expanding our terrain offering. Starting Saturday, we will be opening the Funitel, Gold Coast, Red Dog, and Resort Chair at Palisades, and we will also be adding Subway, Meadow, and the Big Carpet at Alpine.
Our teams work around the clock to get the mountain ready for skiing and riding. They’re among the best in the game – and they want to share what they know with you. We want you to be armed with the most accurate, most up-to-date information possible to plan ahead for your skiing & snowboarding this winter. Use these resources to get your insider Operations information this season:
As stated in our first operations blog of the season, Palisades will open on Wednesday, November 22nd with First Venture chairlift in the base area. By Saturday, we expect to expand our terrain to include Treeline Cirque to mid-station at Alpine. Thank you, snowmakers!
This season marks the 50th year that Jimmy King has been working at Palisades Tahoe. Jimmy is our Mountain Manager on the Palisades side of our resort, a role he has held since the early 90s. We caught up with our well-loved, fearless leader about what it has been like to dedicate 50 years to this mountain, and what he’s looking forward to this winter.
In the past 2 years, Palisades Tahoe has invested over 6 Million in snowmaking infrastructure upgrades across both Palisades and Alpine. A lot of the work we did this summer was finishing up projects from last year.
As we look ahead to this coming winter, our Operations teams are gearing up to start the season again. We’re checking in with each team about what they worked on this summer, and what is new for this coming season. This week, we’re featuring our Grooming departments at both Palisades and Alpine.
When the autumn chill moves into the Tahoe region, those thoughts of impending winter start to creep back in. For our snowmaking department, this is when the season starts. Our snowmakers take a lot of pride in being the ones to kick off winter. The heavy anticipation of what’s to come is ingrained in the work that they do. Once they’ve started making a significant amount of snow, other departments like Grooming can start work, too, and before you know it, winter has begun.
The closing celebration of the historic 2022-23 winter season is here! We’ll be saying goodbye to winter with skiing, t-shirt giveaways, live music, and more at Alpine. We’ve also got some warm temperatures in the forecast and a new parking program for this event. Here’s what to expect.
This summer, we will be replacing the haul rope on the Funitel. The haul rope is the main cable you see carrying cabins to and from the upper mountain. This project has been scheduled for over two years: it is a major and necessary maintenance project that requires significant advance planning. Crews from the lift manufacturer will be coming from Europe to assist with this project as well. We’ll be posting updates to this blog each time something exciting happens with this project.
Have you ever wondered how we maintain our ski runs as the snow starts to melt? There is a TON of work that goes on behind-the-scenes to move and shape existing snow into the mountain you see each morning. This is no simple task, and it requires a decent amount of experience and expertise from our seasoned snowcat operators, but there are tools to help make it easier. We’re going to take a look at SnowSat, the technology that PistenBully snowcats come equipped with.
