Operations Update: 44″ Inches? It’s Go Time!

It’s April 4, and I want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank Miracle March for dumping 112″ inches of snow on our upper mountain. The most recent storm flurried 44″ inches of fresh powder to the mountain in only 3-days. The skiing has been absolutely phenomenal, and it feels like we’re just getting started! If you haven’t skied with us yet this season, it’s not too late, nor is it too early, as 25/26 Ikon Pass holders can start riding with us RIGHT NOW (Ikon Base Pass holders can join in April 7). So get out here, ride with your friends, join in on our signature events, enjoy live music, and party with Lake Tahoe’s one and only Spring Skiing Capital!

Weather

The shift from dumping snow to gorgeous weather has already begun, as we see mainly sunny skies through the weekend with highs in the 40s and 50s. On Monday we could see a weak system with a few scattered showers and gusty conditions before turning right back around to sunny and warm through the rest of the week. For more information, check out the weather blog by Open Snow’s Bryan Allegretto.

Conditions

It is prime-time spring skiing conditions. You can find chalky snow in the Northern and shaded aspects which will provide some smooth turns. Now that we will be in a freeze-thaw cycle (freezing overnight, thawing during the day), you should follow the sun for the softest turns. Our mountain operations teams will focus on “harvesting corn” to maximize high-quality skiing for weeks.

What is corn snow you may ask? It is a type of snow that forms after warm daytime temperatures and freezing overnight temperatures that result in large round snow grains that resemble a kernel of corn and provide absolutely amazingly soft turns. At The Spring Skiing Capital we take harvesting corn snow seriously, so that you can have a seriously good time! To protect our corn, we often have to rotate when we open and close terrain, so we want to say thank you for staying out of closed terrain, and being patient while we farm.

Operations

At Palisades

Belmont is closed for the season as we are shifting our terrain park focus from Belmont to Emigrant Gully. The majority of our lifts are staying on schedule, with Emigrant and Solitude shifting to weekends only. Going forward Silverado’s opening will be on a day-to-day basis according to conditions.

At Alpine

This is the last weekend for Lakeview as we need to begin forestry work on that terrain. Yellow will also close after this upcoming weekend (all of the terrain is still accessible from Summit and Roundhouse). Kangaroo is done for the season as we are experiencing some mechanical issues with the bull wheel.
