While Tahoe is known for it’s captivating summers and powerful winters, fall in Tahoe is not something you want to miss. From cooler weather perfect for mountain biking, to the aspens turning a beautiful bright yellow color, here are the best ways to experience fall in Lake Tahoe.
Visit Emerald Bay
On almost every Tahoe travel website, a visit to Emerald Bay is a must. The pristine water, flowing waterfalls, and jaw-dropping mountain slopes make this place really special. In fall, you can find hints of golden yellow and orange amongst the trees. While there, it’s recommended to hike to Eagle Lake. It is a short hike, venturing upwards amongst cascading waterfalls, lush vegetation, and beautiful evergreen trees.
Hike Shirley Canyon
The Shirley Canyon hike remains a local favorite for experiencing fall color and changing leaves. You can view waterfalls, some long-lasting wildflowers, and plan out your lines for winter when you hit Shirley Lake at the base of the Solitude lift. Continue upwards to High Camp, where you can enjoy the view of Olympic Valley on the Aerial Tram. Even your favorite four-legged friends can join you on the way down!
Go Kayaking
Pick a day when the winds are quiet and Lake Tahoe looks like a mirror! Some of the most beautiful views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra Mountains can be found from out on the Lake itself. You can see all of the vibrant colors of the trees as well as the clarity of the water from either a kayak or paddleboard.
Enjoy Page Meadows
If you’re looking for a quiet spot, check out Page Meadows in Tahoe City. It’s a beautiful meadow that has some amazing views of the lake and aspen trees that will surely be a stunning golden yellow. It’s a great spot for a picnic or a fun romp for your dog.
Venture to the Martis Peak Fire Lookout
If you want a short hike with a big reward look no further. Head to 267 and look for a small, gated turn-out near the southbound passing lane. Drive as far up the road as you can before you reach a parking lot. Then take your short hike upwards and you will spot the fire lookout built in 1914. This spot will give you a view of the entire lake, and the beautiful yellow aspens dotting the forest.
