14+ FEET of snow in January; Season total of 369 inches and counting!
We’re nearly at our average season snowfall of 400” and we still have 4+ months of winter remaining. The massive snowfall amount in January allowed us to open 100% of our terrain including Silverado. Our crews worked hard on the mountain and in the base areas to provide an amazing month of skiing for you!
Not quite record-breaking…but almost!
So, how does January 2023 measure up compared to previous seasons?
Well, this year we recorded 172” at our Belmont snow plot on the Palisades side. In the last twenty years, that record has only been beaten once, during the 2016-2017 season, when the January total was a whopping 274”!
In third place is the 2007-2008 season, with a January total of 148”. We were lucky to receive so much snow this January; it set us up for a great season of skiing and riding ahead.
This January we opened 100% of our terrain on both the Palisades and Alpine side. We hope you had a great time out there skiing wall-to-wall, now seamlessly connected by the Base to Base Gondola! We were also able to open Silverado, which only opens when we have enough snow to build the Oregon Trail road.
What’s ahead?
The first week of February has a couple of weak storms, with the first one dropping this Friday. Then it’s looking drier into the second week of the month, when we could see some more storms on the way.
The massive snowfall we saw in January is setting us up for a long season of skiing and riding. Here at the Spring Skiing Capital, we know that bluebird days are abundant and we have a deep base for the months ahead.
That said, there are still plenty of months of winter ahead and we’ll see how much more snow Mother Nature delivers. That will help determine whether skiing and riding will go beyond Memorial Day weekend this year…keep your fingers crossed for Fourth of July skiing this season. While it’s a little too early to make any real predictions about the length of the season, this January storm has us off to a great start.
