The U.S. Forest Service has issued a closure of nine Northern California National Forests, including the Tahoe National Forest and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, due to wildfire threat in the region. The order extends from August 22 through September 6 and affects some trails at our mountains.
What is Closed
- At Squaw Valley, the Shirley Canyon Trail and Granite Chief Trail are closed. The Western States Trail can be accessed via the Thunder Mountain Trail out of the base area, but not by points east.
- At Alpine Meadows, all forested areas are within the National Forest lands, so access is currently prohibited. This includes the Five Lakes Trail.
These temporary closures were issued to ensure public and firefighter safety, as well as reduce the potential for new wildfire starts. Please respect all area closures, obey posted signs and closure barriers, and do your part to stay fire safe.
What is Open
The Village, activities, dining, and other hiking trails on Squaw Valley private lands will remain open, conditions permitting.
High Camp and the Aerial Tram will remain open during this closure for sightseeing, dining, roller skating, e-mountain bike tours and other usual activities, conditions permitting. While this forest closure will not impact High Camp operations, poor air quality due to wildfire smoke can be a threat to the health of guests and employees, so you may see holds or closures of operations if the air quality is deemed unsafe. Please check our website for current Tram operations.

The air quality in the North Lake Tahoe area is currently poor, but it can fluctuate based on winds and other factors. We recommend checking our webcams and PurpleAir.com for real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) readings before visiting.
