Snowfall Report:
4 inches of new snow fell at the base and 7 inches on the upper mountain over the past 24 hours, as of 5 AM Tuesday. That brings the 3-day storm total to 33 inches on the upper mountain, the March total to 154 inches so far, and the season total to 655 inches and counting!
The mountain is closed for Tuesday with the heavy rain pushing in along with high winds.
Tuesday Storm:
A wet storm is moving through Tuesday with rising snow levels and strong winds. Showers continue into Tuesday evening with falling snow levels, but the storm clears out by midnight. Highs in the 30s. Ridgetop winds gusting up to 90-100+ mph.
Snow levels rise up to 7300-8300 ft. Tuesday morning into the afternoon with heavy rain on the lower mountain and wet snow above the snow line. The snow levels fall Tuesday evening with a cold front moving through. Dropping to the base through the evening but the storm is winding down by then.
Here is the updated forecast for total snowfall expected Tuesday through Tuesday evening.
- 1-4 inches at the base.
- 4-18 inches at mid-mountain elevations.
- 16-22 inches on the upper mountain above 8000 feet.
Wednesday – Thursday:
A nice day is expected for Wednesday and Thursday with partly-mostly sunny skies and lighter winds. Highs into the 30s on the mountain and near 40 degrees at the base.
The Weekend:
We could see a pair of weak systems move through Friday-Sunday with some light rain and snow showers. Snow levels look to hover near the base. We’ll continue to watch the trends with more details in the next few days. Right now the models are not in agreement on the timing, track, and other details with the fast-moving systems.
Long-Range:
The long-range models show us going back into a cold trough pattern the week of the 20th. We could see below-average temperatures and a pair of moderate-strength storms. The first storm could bring snow around the 21st-22nd, and another around the 24th-25th. We’ll continue to watch the trends with these storms as we get closer.
During the last several days of the month into April, the storms will likely become more spaced and weaker as we go deeper into the spring season. I’m hoping for a sunny weekend with spring skiing finally by the time we get to the first weekend of April when the Winter Wondergrass Festival will be here!
