The construction of the Base to Base Gondola has long been a dream. For nearly a century, local resort leaders have imagined a European-style ski circus that would connect from Sugarbowl all the way to Lake Tahoe. This is a look at the history of their plans, and how pieces of it came to life.
After kicking off the winter season earlier this month, Palisades Tahoe is slated to debut the long-awaited Base to Base Gondola in mid-December with a full day of festivities to ring in a new era at the resort. The Base to Base Gondola Grand Opening Celebration will take place on Saturday, December 17, complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony, special performances, fireworks, and more. The event is free and open to the public.
This winter Palisades Tahoe will become the first ski resort in North America that is home to an aerial tramway, a funitel, and a gondola. Why do these lifts have different names? In the past, you might’ve heard the Funitel or the Aerial Tram referred to as a “gondola”, but technically, neither of them is a gondola. What makes a gondola a gondola? In short, these three lifts have fundamentally different constructions and capacities.
For the second season under its new name, Palisades Tahoe will debut its new Base to Base Gondola, host the 2023 World Cup competitors, bring back fan-favorite events, and offer new upgrades, programs, and promotions for new and longtime visitors. Conditions permitting, the resort is scheduled to open on November 22, 2022.
