Weekend Preview: December 16-17

  • Dec 13, 2017
  • 3:34 pm

We’re in store for another beautiful, sunny weekend of skiing & riding. The temperatures will cool down a bit with some wind and highs in 30s, so bring an extra layer to lap the slopes.

24 Lifts, 75+ Runs, 1,000 Skiable Acres Open

With 1,000 acres, 24 lifts and over 75 trails open at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, we have the most terrain open and most variety in Tahoe right now! Nightly temperatures have been consistently cold, allowing us to make snow and continuously open terrain, with plans to open even more in the coming days.

Grab your family, friends, ski buddies (or just show up and make some new ones on the lift) and come check out all the open terrain. We have plenty of beginner slopes, groomed runs, lake views and top-to-bottom skiing at both mountains. If you’re feeling adventurous, check out some of the newly opened off-piste terrain including the backside of Emigrant and Kitchen Wall!

The Snow is sticking around!

Even though we’re still anxiously awaiting the next big storm, the snow we already received (64″ so far up high!) has been sticking around due to cool temperatures, short daylight and low angle of the December sun. Here are some stats on snow levels compared to last year:

  • In November 2017 we had 144% of average snowfall from the past 45 years

  • We have more lifts and trails open today than we did this date last year: 24 out of 42 lifts open, 73 out of 270 trails open, with terrain for all ability levels, plus terrain parks and weekend snowtubing

  • We’ve already opened some of our most well-known advanced terrain back in November (Palisades, Siberia) that wasn’t even open mid-December the previous year

Fun Conditions

Thanks to all the November snowfall and amazing work from our snowmaking, grooming and terrain park teams, conditions are really fun right now! Check them out:

The forecast is calling for a slight chance of light snow Friday night, and some high gusts of wind forecasted for Saturday. Be sure to tune into our mobile app, lift & grooming page and Operations Twitter for the most up-to-date information on what’s spinning!

Terrain Parks

Our terrain parks continue to draw some of Tahoe’s best local shredders as well as those working to hone in their park skills. Check out what features are up at Squaw and Alpine here.

Merry Days & Holly Nights (Dec 16-31) Kicks Off

The mountains will come alive with holiday cheer this weekend as Santa arrives in the Village this Saturday! Merry Days & Holly Nights  kicks off with Opening Ceremonies on Saturday at 4pm. There will be a Kids Carnival in the Olympic House, a glow stick parade with fire ninjas and Santa, a Tahoe Fire Dancers performance in Merry Wonderland (OVL) and even a Singing Christmas Tree. On Sunday, you can catch Santa in the Village, on a horse drawn sleigh ride, or for a free story telling!

Sunrise Snowmaking at Palisades

Operations Blog: Snowmaking 101

When the autumn chill moves into the Tahoe region, those thoughts of impending winter start to creep back in. For our snowmaking department, this is when the season starts. Our snowmakers take a lot of pride in being the ones to kick off winter. The heavy anticipation of what's to come is ingrained in the work that they do. Once they've started making a significant amount of snow, other departments like Grooming can start work, too, and before you know it, winter has begun.

A Funitel cabin in low visibility during a winter storm.

Operations Blog: Funitel Haul Rope Project Updates

This summer, we will be replacing the haul rope on the Funitel. The haul rope is the main cable you see carrying cabins to and from the upper mountain. This project has been scheduled for over two years: it is a major and necessary maintenance project that requires significant advance planning. Crews from the lift manufacturer will be coming from Europe to assist with this project as well. We'll be posting updates to this blog each time something exciting happens with this project.
