MLK Weekend Preview: Jan 13-15

  • Jan 9, 2018
  • 3:45 pm

We’re in store for another long weekend of fun skiing & riding, sunny skies, spring-like conditions and tons of events and activities off the slopes!

Weather & Conditions

9″ of New Snow in the Last Week

Skier Maggie Eshbaugh testing out the new snow on the upper mountain. Shot on Gopro on January 9, 2018.

Monday’s wet storm delivered 3″ of new snow on the upper mountain terrain. This made for some soft, fun turns on Tuesday and a nice refresh of white at our higher elevations (9″ total in the last week). While snowstorms are clearing out for a few days, we are stoked for another weekend of sunny skies, mild temperatures and fun groomed terrain over the weekend. As the temperatures warm into the 40s throughout the day, the snow should be soft and spring-like!

Tip: Beginners will love the High Camp area with groomed green runs off Mountain Meadow and Bailey’s Beach and beautiful views of Lake Tahoe.

More Snow Ahead

Another storm pattern moves in early next week, and we are hopeful for some more snow!

Next week we could see the first storm move in as early as Monday night. It looks like we are heading into a stormier pattern next week that could last for at least a week. The storms do have colder air with them.” — Bryan Allegreto’s Weather Blog

Operations Update: Wednesday Re-Opening Plans

Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 15th, we plan to reopen both Alpine and Palisades. We appreciate your patience with us being closed today: Our teams NEEDED this day to try to get ahead a bit, and snow conditions are not conducive to a good day of skiing -- It rained as far up as 9,000 feet at times. We spent the day continuing to dig out, performing snow safety, addressing flood zones, and preparing for the few days ahead that have a break in the weather. Tomorrow, we still expect that some of our lifts will be delayed. We will start with a lower mountain offering and expand throughout the day as we can.

Operations Update: The Never-Ending Storm Cycle + Sunday Expectations

Following a very wet 36 hours, we achieved the opening goals we set yesterday and got every lift that we expected today, thanks to the hard work of our ops teams. Seriously, it is hard work out there: So many people are out there digging chairlifts out by hand after spending the early morning hours digging their vehicles and homes out first. Our snowpack is very saturated with water and heavy, which can also make things difficult for our grooming machines. We truly have no clear days in the forecast to recover from this wet weather event, so we appreciate your patience.
