We’re Skiing Palisades in June!

  • Jun 2, 2017
  • 8:35 am

Snowpack is DEEP

We’re cruising towards summer and the mountains are packed with snow. The base depth on the upper mountain is still over 14 FEET deep. We’re stoked that Palisades has been able to stay open so we can lay down some sweet late season turns.

Unbelievable coverage for late season. Skier: Markham Gross

Scramble to the Top

Unzip all your vents and trek to the top of Squaw Peak (el. 8900′) from the top of Siberia. National is skiing great and is worth the hike!

Hiking Palisades

Be aware that the trail is rocky and dusty. Take care to keep your balance while walking over large pieces of gravel.

Enjoy the View

Even if it weren’t for the skiing, sweeping views from the top of Palisades would make the hike worth it. Take in the glorious panorama of Lake Tahoe, Squaw Valley and the surrounding Sierra.

Lake View

A nice place to catch your breath after a short but steep climb

Ski it while you can!

Before charging up the mountain, check for obvious open/closed signage at the base of the Palisades. Patrol explained that they are making a “day-by-day assessment” on opening the terrain. Operations are dependent on coverage and snow stability, which can change rapidly as temps heat up.  We’re always hoping for a good overnight freeze in spring. Cold temps help preserve the integrity of the snowpack and produces the best quality corn snow.

Open sign Palisades

The open chutes will be listed on the signboard on the Patrol Shack. Extra, Main and National have been opening daily for the past few weeks. Chimney is closed due to snow melt and a huge glide crack that formed near the bottom of the chute.

National

National is the wide open bowl to skier’s right of the Palisades. Although it’s probably the mellowest of the Palisades chutes, there are 3 large rocky formations on the far right side that form a gentle chute.

Dropping in. Skier: Markham Gross

This is my favorite line to ski- it has a great pitch and you make a couple quick turns between rocks before it dumps you back into the bowl.

Palisades Corn

Soft corn- throw a coat of warm wax on your skis and boards

Get out and enjoy the sweet creamy corn! We’re still spinning 9 lifts and there’s MILES of open terrain to ski and ride.

Bluebird skies and plenty of snow

Operations

Squaw plans to continue 9am-4pm daily operations thru June 4, then switch to Saturday & Sunday operations from 10am-2pm thru June 25, plus July 1-4. Starting July 8, we plan to be open Saturdays into summer as conditions allow, 10am-2pm.

Photo Gallery: The Great Dig Out at Palisades

What a turbulent but exciting month March has been so far! The snow depth on our upper mountain is upward of 18 feet, and we are at 166% of total average snowfall. We started the first day of March off with 3 feet of snow in 24 hours. Then, after a small break in the weather, we received snow (and at some elevations rain) every day between March 5th and March 15th! Our season-to-date snowfall total is now sitting at 662 inches, or just over 55 FEET of snow. 14 of those feet have fallen in March alone!
