Weekend Preview: June 17-18

Weekend Preview at The Spring Skiing Capital

We’re in for some glorious warm weather this weekend! Take a couple spring laps in the morning and follow it up with an afternoon at the newly opened High Camp Pool.

Skiing & Riding

10am-2pm Saturday & Sunday

Party Wiggle on Shirley!

Shirley’s banked slalom is getting deep! Skier: Maggie Eshbaugh, Snowboarders: Lindsey Wexler, Tim Bosse

There’s still plenty of terrain to ski and ride on the upper mountain! These 6 lifts are on the schedule:

  • Funitel
  • Aerial Tram
  • Gold Coast
  • Siberia
  • Shirley Lake
  • Big Blue

We’re shooting for the same lift ops as last weekend but please keep in mind, we’re at the mercy of the June snow melt! Our crews are on the mountain assessing terrain day by day. They are doing what they can to preserve the snow surface by salting and “snow farming” (i.e. moving snow from one place on the mountain to another). Due to conditions, please note that our operations outlook is subject to change on a daily basis.

Cat Farming Snow Siberia Ridge

Our crews are out on the mountain battling snow melt

After pushing snow today, our Grooming Manager Kurt Wilhelmy reported,

“We have lost a significant amount of snow with the heat, we are moving as much as we can so we are able to still enjoy this amazing season.”

Areas of high wind and sun exposure are most susceptible to melt- in the past week the top of Shirley and Siberia have thinned considerably. Be prepared to maneuver around a dirt patch or two to get to the deeper snow pack. Also be aware of unmarked obstacles as the snow melts.

Cat Farming Snow Siberia Ridge

Building a path along Siberia Ridge so you can get to the deeper snow pack.

As temps heat up, rivers can form under the snow surface and create holes in the base, especially on ungroomed trails. Please take extra precautions when skiing on ungroomed terrain. Always ski in control and pay attention to the snow surface.

If you’re riding in the Shirley Lake zone, don’t miss the banked slalom!

Photo Gallery: The Great Dig Out at Palisades

What a turbulent but exciting month March has been so far! The snow depth on our upper mountain is upward of 18 feet, and we are at 166% of total average snowfall. We started the first day of March off with 3 feet of snow in 24 hours. Then, after a small break in the weather, we received snow (and at some elevations rain) every day between March 5th and March 15th! Our season-to-date snowfall total is now sitting at 662 inches, or just over 55 FEET of snow. 14 of those feet have fallen in March alone!
