Top 5 Spring Activities (that aren’t skiing)

  • Apr 13, 2022
  • 2:46 pm

While skiing and riding are our favorite activities in spring, the longer (and warmer) days allow us to enjoy other activities after making some turns. Luckily for us, we are situated in one of the most outdoor-oriented communities around Lake Tahoe, and that means you can ski AND do other activities all in one day! These are our favorite pastimes we recommend you squeeze in before or after hitting the slopes:

Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

Glide over the crystal blue water of Lake Tahoe on a paddleboard. The best times to go are in the morning when the lake is nice and calm or late in the evening after hitting the slopes. Our favorite rental spots are Tahoe City Kayak or West Shore Sports.

Biking

Lake Tahoe is a big biking community and there are options for everyone! If you’re with the family or looking to take a leisurely cruise, check out the paved bike path along the Truckee River that starts in Olympic Valley and brings you right to the shores of Lake Tahoe in Tahoe City. Looking for more of an adventure? Grab a mountain bike and hit one of the many downhill or cross-country trails in North Lake Tahoe.

Hiking

Elevate your spring by hiking to a destination that offers stellar views of Lake Tahoe and beyond. Some of our favorite trails are right here in Olympic Valley. Shirley Canyon, near the base of The Village at Palisades Tahoe, has some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the area. The best time to check them out is in the spring as the snow begins to melt and falls are raging!

Boating

Cruise the Lake Tahoe shoreline this spring and bask in the California sunshine. Traveling by boat is a one-of-a-kind experience, especially in the spring when boat traffic is at a minimum. For private charters or sailing cruises, reserve an adventure with Tahoe Sailing Charters. Or book a spot on the iconic Tahoe Gal for a jaunt across Tahoe to Emerald Bay, a National Landmark. Please note: reservations are highly recommended due to the new reduced seating.

Beach Hangouts & BBQs

Lake Tahoe has miles of public beaches and state parks. Kick back your feet and head to the beaches in Tahoe City or Kings Beach to sun your legs and take a dip in Lake Tahoe. Commons Beach, in the heart of Tahoe City, is one of our favorites due to its centralized location and playground for the kids. If you’re looking to play games, check out Kings Beach for volleyball courts, plus it’s walking distance to town!

There’s no shortage of activities to do in Lake Tahoe this spring, so when you’re packing for a weekend getaway bring your ski gear, fun costumes, bathing suit and hiking gear.

Photo Gallery: The Great Dig Out at Palisades

What a turbulent but exciting month March has been so far! The snow depth on our upper mountain is upward of 18 feet, and we are at 166% of total average snowfall. We started the first day of March off with 3 feet of snow in 24 hours. Then, after a small break in the weather, we received snow (and at some elevations rain) every day between March 5th and March 15th! Our season-to-date snowfall total is now sitting at 662 inches, or just over 55 FEET of snow. 14 of those feet have fallen in March alone!
