Dec 26-31st: Events + What To Expect for the Holiday Week at Palisades Tahoe

  • Dec 25, 2022
  • 7:49 pm
A lit up Christmas Tree off of the KT-22 run at Palisades Tahoe.

The holiday season is in full swing! Our events and activities schedule is jam-packed over the next few days. You won’t want to miss out on these fun and spirited occasions. While this tends to be one of our busier times of the year, the forecast is shaping up to be very dynamic. We are expecting an influx of weather that is a wintry mix (meaning rain and snow) which could impact our operations at times. That said, we still have LOTS going on, plenty of indoor events, cozy spots to warm up, and more.

Kids Craft & Game Room

Each day this holiday season, kids can enjoy arcade games, air hockey, ping pong, crafts and movies playing constantly in The Palisades Conference Room located across from the Village front desk. Open daily from 10am-9pm.

  • Guests of The Village at Palisades Tahoe enter for free
  • Day passes are $10 for non-hotel guests
  • All children must be accompanied by an adult

Weather Forecast

The best way to stay up-to-date on what to expect for weather is to read our Weather Blog, which we post almost daily. It is written by local weather forecaster Bryan Allegretto of OpenSnow. Here’s what Bryan is predicting for this week:

  • Monday, December 26th: Highs in the 40s. Winds increasing to 70+ mph by afternoon.
  • Tuesday, December 27th: The storm will start as rain showers. Winds will gust over 100mph. Heavy, wet snow will fall at the base, with up 23 inches of snow up top by Wednesday morning.
  • Wednesday, December 28th: Possibly a small break in storms during the day. Another storm will move in on Wednesday night, bringing up to 17 inches of snow.
  • Thursday, December 29th onward: Storms possible Thursday, Friday, and New Year’s Eve.

Will lift operations be impacted?

When storms start warm with rain and then turn cold, we often see icing issues with our lifts. There may be some delays or operational impacts due to this. Additionally, strong winds in this first storm cycle are likely to cause wind holds on our upper mountains. The best way to stay up-to-date with real-time lift and trail information is to follow the Palisades Tahoe Mountain Operations Twitter account and download the Palisades Tahoe App.

Be Prepared for the Holiday Week

Reminder: Blackout dates are in effect this week for Ikon Base Pass holders, Ikon Session 4-Day holders, Midweek 4-Pack holders, Tahoe Super 2-Pack holders, and Military Pass holders. The blackout dates are December 26th through December 31st.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR THE RESORT

  • Leave early. Our parking lots sometimes fill by 9am.
  • Check road conditions using the CalTrans QuickMap App (or NVRoads if coming from Nevada).
  • Check parking status using the Palisades Tahoe mobile app. You can now get real-time updates on how much parking is available in all of our lots to help you make informed decisions about where to park. If our lots fill, do not keep trying to drive to the resort. Please use one of our free, convenient regional transportation options instead (listed below)
  • If you want to guarantee a spot, a small amount of prepaid parking is available at Alpine only.
  • Consider carpooling. Carpools of 3+ get to park in our premium lots while space is available.
  • We recommend booking tickets, lessons, rentals, and activities online rather than waiting to buy in person. You’ll save money and it will take less time.

What should I do if parking fills up? Can I get a refund? If we say our parking is full, it is FULL so please do not continue to the resort. We will not have spots in our lots until later in the afternoon. Drop-offs are not permitted when parking is full. If you are unable to park at either mountain and need to make a change to your lift ticket, lesson, rental/demo, or activity reservation, you can call our contact center at 1-800-403-0206. We honor all refunds that are requested due to park-out conditions.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

  • At Palisades, you can get breakfast at Sun Bowl, Starbucks, Coffeebar, or Wildflour. At Alpine, you can get breakfast at Mogrog or Treats.
  • If you booked a lesson + rental and/or tickets, all of those things can be picked up at once. At Palisades, visit the Ski School Rental Shop, located across from Le Chamois behind the Aerial Tram building. At Alpine, Ski School is on the lower level of the Alpine Lodge. You do not need to wait in separate ticket and rental lines.
  • If you booked a rental and a ticket, the rental shop can print your tickets for you. You do not need to wait in a ticket line as well. At Palisades, the Rental Shop is between the Ticket Office and Parallel Mountain Sports. At Alpine, the Rental Shop is on the lower level of the Alpine Lodge.
  • If you are picking up a lift ticket or a Tahoe Super 4-Pack only, you can use the self-serve kiosks in the Funitel plaza, the Aerial Tram building, or in front of the Alpine Lodge to print your ticket.
  • Due to a power issue near Summit Chairlift at Alpine, some of the cell towers on Ward Peak are malfunctioning. Phone service at Alpine may be spotty.

TIPS FOR A SMOOTH DAY

  • Put your RFID ticket, pass, or pack in a pocket, but don’t keep it next to a cell phone or credit card.
  • Use the Palisades Tahoe mobile app to check lift wait times, lift status, and more.
  • Consider staying at the resort later than 4-5pm to avoid waiting in traffic. You can grab dinner or après from The Village at Palisades Tahoe or from the Alpine Lodge area.
  • Please remember that we absolutely do not allow uphill travel. You cannot use backcountry equipment and you cannot hike outside of operating hours.
  • While dogs are welcome in The Village at Palisades Tahoe, dogs are not allowed on snow. This is especially important in ensuring the safety of our Patrol Dogs on staff.

FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS

We have so many options for public transportation. Please use them as an alternative to adding another vehicle on our Tahoe roadways.

  • Take the FREE Mountaineer shuttle from your in-valley hotel or cabin to the resort: Use the free Mountaineer shuttle to be dropped off anywhere in the communities of Alpine Meadows or Olympic Valley. Summon this shuttle using the Mountaineer app. Mountaineer’s schedule has been extended this year, and we’ll have daily service from 5pm-10:30pm between Alpine and Palisades.
  • Use the TART Connect to get dinner or explore Tahoe City: The free TART Connect will be operating on Friday & Saturday night, connecting the Olympic Valley and Tahoe City communities between the hours of 6pm and 11pm. Download the app or call 530-214-5811 to arrange a pickup.
  • Take the TART Bus any day to get to and from the resort: The free regional TART bus travels from Truckee and from Tahoe City on a regular schedule. Schedule here.
  • Use the Palisades Tahoe Express Shuttle to go between the two mountains or to Resort Chair: The Palisades shuttle stop is across from Coffeebar and the Alpine shuttle stop is directly in front of the breezeway.

Will the Gondola be open?

As we write (on Sunday, December 25th) the Base to Base Gondola is on the schedule for Monday, December 26th, operating as two separate lifts rather than one continuous lift (more on that here). You can still take the Gondola between The Village at Palisades and the Alpine Lodge; you will just have to disembark briefly at the KT-22 mid-station and reload into another cabin. The Gondola likely will not be on the schedule for Tuesday, December 27th, due to extremely high wind forecasts.

Will Red Dog be open?

The best way to get the latest information on the Red Dog chairlift is to check our Construction Blog and Operations Blog as this is a dynamic situation that changes often. The incoming weather may impact the plan as well. As of right now, the Red Dog chairlift is not expected to open until early January.
