Where It All Started
Before pond skims were popping up at resorts everywhere, a handful of skiers stood at the edge of Cushing Pond and had an idea: “What if you could just get from one end to the other on a pair of twigs?” Somehow that idea turned into what is now one of the most iconic events in skiing and snowboarding.
Not Your Average Pond Skim
Cushing Crossing happens on a real pond, tucked into a natural amphitheater that almost feels as if it were placed in this exact location for this exact event. The crowd stacks up from the shoreline all the way up the mountain, wrapping the venue in noise, energy, and just the right amount of heckling. And if you’ve never been, it’s hard to explain just how big it feels. Close enough to get splashed if things go sideways. Far enough up the hill to see the full run-in and pick your favorites. No matter where you end up, it feels like the best seat in the house.
Go Fast or Go Swimming
There’s no secret strategy here. Speed helps, style matters, but commitment is essential. Get ready to point it and hope you’ve got enough momentum to make it across. Or at least make it look good when you don’t. Costumes are mandatory and the more ridiculous the better.
